How do you like them Apples!?

Things have been crazy as of late.. We're getting close to wrapping up a 1.1.0 release on Hey, What's the Golf Score? ... should be rolling it out in the coming weeks.. I've also have been contacted by a couple people about doing some iPhone development for them. Meeting one person tomorrow night... I'm interested in seeing where that goes.. Worst case is I'll continue to develop the handful of apps I have in our labs.. A couple are showing some real promise.. Oh yes, and then there's always my 9-5 gig... Needless to say.. I'm busy busy busy...

I haven't heard much about the battery performance yet... So I went out and looked for it.. I found PC Mag has done a review on the new battery technology.

Well I've had my Air for a week now and can say... I love it... I also love my MB Pro... So this is how I think they compare...

Air is extremely portable... MB Pro is more of a mobile desktop replacement, a true office on the go. However the MB Pro is 17" and little bulkier, this is the main reason for getting the air.. Easier to use while traveling on business... The Air is usable and fits while in an airplane.

Air has good enough punch for on the go computing. I've ran xCode on the Air, and did some good iPhone development. I was suprirsed at how well it handled development.. But I'm mainly enjoying it as a netbook style substitute.. Browsing the web & IM etc. The MB Pro has awesome performance... I use this for any heavy duty tasks. JEE developmnet, iPhone Development, Photoshop usage, high IO tasks, etc...

Air's battery life is okay.. I'm getting around 3-4 Hours on the charge, but the MB Pro seems to do better (4+ hours)... I do not have the unibody MB Pro 17", I do wonder if you get the 8 hours as claimed.. The main complaint that I have about the Air's battery life is when I'm in standby... seems to still drain the battery heavily... I don't experience the same behavior on the Pro...

Disk performance... I'm loving the SSD on the Air.. The MacBook Pro has the 7200 rpm... I would say they are pretty comparable... I do notice the writes on the SSD is a little slower than it probably should be... Yeah, this is purely subjective... The reads on SSD are very performant.. It is faster to startup & shutdown the Air than the Pro.

Display... I would say the clear winner on this is the MB Pro.. I'm just way to use to the 17" with 1920 by 1200... The Air is 13.3" with 1280 by 800.. For the purpose of the Air it will fit the bill, but I love the larger resolution... The most noticeable problem is the tool bar on the Air. I think it should/could be smaller.

Form-Factor... The Air is a complete work of Art... I love it... I also love the form-factor of the Pro, but it's definitely for a different need.

I hope these comparisons help people looking at these two machines.... If in doubt, get both

I just purchased a new mac book air tonight to accompany my mac book pro... I needed/wanted a more portable laptop since I'll be doing a lot of airline traveling this year... This will be a nice complement to my workhorse... Almost 18 months ago I asked for a SSD drive from Apple... and today my dream has come true..

 

Now I just need to name it...

I just ran across a really cool looking mac app. It's the delicious monster. It catalogs your movies, books, and much more... A couple years ago I thought about writing an app like this for myself, but never got around to it. Luckily now I don't have too... I'm seriously thinking about purchasing it. It's a little pricey ($40 dollars), but seems like it's worth it.

i forgot to mention the other day... when i got the new machine... last weekend I also bought a stunning 24" samsung hd lcd monitor... I was going to hold out for an apple cinema display.. but i figured.. why wait and this was cheaper...

i must say.. extending the desktop across two nice beautiful machines is amazing... they're both 1920 x 1200 displays

anyways... back to learning cocoa touch

So my old powerbook was doing just fine, until apple announced that their iphone sdk was ready to go. So I had to scramble to find the funds to buy the fully loaded mac book pro (core2 duo 2.6, 4 gigs of ram 7200 rpm, 17" led display)... i must say it's one sweet machine... I got it aweek ago. I can tell you that it's blazing fast.. Java development will definitely be fun again.. the old powerbook was starting to drag me down on boot times for jboss... this launches in under 30 seconds w/ applications installed. oh by the way... i'm teaching myself objective-c, and cocoa to do some iphone development...


two weeks ago i bought a handful of cocoa & objective c books, and a couple on iphone development... now that i've brushed up on c skillz that i haven't used in about 12 years i'm starting with the basic hello world programs... wish me luck

So two features I've wished the iPhone had in the last week are:

1) allow for multiple voicemail greeting recordings, and allow to toggle between them

2) alarm clock to play mp3's .

After requesting this for more than 6 Months on here it's official... Apple has done it...

I think it's very close to what I want.. but a little off...

Things I'd like to see:

1) More ports in general
2) cheaper ssd options
3) option for a larger display... 13" is nice, but I love my 17"

If I was an executive I'd definitely be getting an Air, however, since my main background is in application development I think it's a close but no cigar...
I think the Air is an engineering marvel.. It'll be interesting to see if any of the macbook pro's are redesigned to take advantage of some of this or not...

And I'll definitely like to see a 2nd revision of the Air.. Overall, I have to say the Mac Book Air is a winner.. I can't wait to here what the sales figures are...
